Alan Shulman

Alan Shulman (b. 1943, New London, NH) grew up in NYC, and spent early summers in the Catskills and early adulthood summers on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan.

His architecture degree studies included 3 years of life drawing and Bauhaus-inspired visual training. In ’74, he passed the architect’s licensing exam, and practiced in that field, with other architects and at his own firm, for 25 years, painting occasionally when time allowed.

In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, he attended several vacation-time workshops with artists Peter London and Seymour Segal exploring ways to increase freedom of expression. In 1992, he switched careers, got a Master’s degree in Special Education, worked 17 years in that field, which also allowed him to have more painting time.

Two artist residencies, one in Mexico, the other in Northwest Georgia, gave Alan a concentrated period of time to develop a series of Holocaust portraits called “Portraits of Zinkov”.

Alan retired in 2009, and has since returned to his first love, painting, which grabbed him at age two…finger-painting at an easel of artist family friend Nat Schwarzberg.

Alan’s life experiences’ are represented in the painting included in this exhibition, as he notices and sketches scenes in New London, NH.

Alan’s artwork was featured in ‘Hi Neighbor!‘ on view August 8-30, 2026.
